What is Pickleball, Anyway?
A brief about the game that's taking the courts by storm
If you’re reading this post, you probably are a good friend of mine or know one of my good friends. Thank you for your support on my pickleball journey!
Over the last few months, a lot of my friends have asked me “What’s the deal with pickleball?” The question usually results in a long conversation where I ramble on about why I think pickleball is amazing, but by the end of it, my friends are excited to try pickleball for themselves.
So, if you've ever wondered what fuels my enthusiasm for pickleball or why I can't help but talk about it, you're about to get the lowdown. Let's dive into the basics and explore what makes pickleball more than just a game in my eyes. By the end of our chat, you might just catch the pickleball bug and be as eager as I am to step onto the court.
What is Pickleball?
Pickleball is a dynamic racquet sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping pong, played on a smaller court with a lower net, using paddles and a perforated plastic ball (a pickleball).
It was started in 1965 in Washington State, gained popularity with retirement communities, and has now drawn the attention of players across all age groups.
Pickleball has seen an astounding growth rate in America over the last few years, with participation numbers soaring by over 650% and a remarkable increase in popularity, particularly among the 18-34 age group, which constitutes approximately 29% of the rapidly expanding player base. (Source)
What are the basic rules?
In pickleball, the objective is to score points by sending the pickleball over the net and into the opponent's side of the court. The serving team initiates play from the right-hand side and must serve diagonally to the opponent's service court.
Points are scored only by the serving team, and if the receiving team faults, the serve is transferred to the opponents. During play, the ball must bounce once on each side before volleys (hitting the ball in the air) are allowed.
Games typically go up to 11 points, with a winning margin of at least two points. The scoring system adds a layer of strategy, making each match an exciting and engaging experience for players.

Why it’s attracted so many — including me
Pickleball has become a sensation for several reasons. First, its accessibility is unmatched—people of all ages and skill levels can easily pick up a paddle and enjoy a game. The court size is smaller than traditional tennis, making it less physically demanding, yet still offering a great workout.
The social aspect is another draw. Pickleball is inherently a social sport, encouraging interaction and camaraderie among players. Its simplicity and the quick learning curve make it an ideal activity for friends and family to enjoy together.
The versatility of pickleball is also key. Whether you're a casual player looking for some fun or a competitive spirit seeking a fast-paced game, pickleball accommodates various playing styles. It's a sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping pong, creating a unique and engaging experience.
Lastly, the sense of inclusivity within the pickleball community is huge. Players often find a welcoming environment that embraces newcomers and encourages skill development. As word spreads about the fun and benefits of pickleball, more and more people are drawn to the courts, contributing to its widespread popularity — and obsession.
